My Life Next Door – Huntley Fitzpatrick – REVIEW

12294652

I received this from NetGalley in return for an honest review. As always this will be a NON spoiler review, because who likes being spoiled? Not me!

This book follows Samantha Reed, the daughter of a Senator, who falls for the boy next door. Jase Garrett comes from the loud and messy family next door. The Garrett family are everything that the Reed family are not. This is kind of a Romeo and Juliet style story.

I’m not gonna lie, I had high hopes! HIGH hopes! I love contemporary and this cover is gorgeous so I assumed I would love it. But I didn’t. It kind of dragged and I’m not sure why. I LOVED the Garrett family. I was so glad to see a normal loving family in a YA novel. This book is not only about young love, its about family and friendship and I really enjoyed that.

However, I didn’t much care for the characters. Some of them were horrible! Nan, Samantha’s so called ‘best friend’ was horrible and Samantha’s mother was awful!

I’m just a bit disappointed really. This was a little too over hyped for me.

3/5 stars!

Only Ever Yours – Louise O’Neill – REVIEW

21805717

Be good. Be pretty. Be Chosen.

I received this from NetGalley in return for an honest review. as always thi will be a NON spoiler review!

Now let me start off by saying, you will not enjoy this book. It’s not meant to be enjoyed. It’s real, and sad, and, frankly, quite depressing. However, I found it very intriguing and I could put it down.

This is set in the future, were woman and now made for one of three purposes. To be a wife, to be a mistress, or to be a nun. That is literally all they can become. I don’t want to say too much because it’s best to go in blind.

I thought this a dark and so very twisted! I kept thinking “something good is going to happen next!” and it doesn’t! It never does! It was so thought provoking and real. Hats off to Louise O’Neill.

Be prepared for this.

4/5 stars!

T5W: Book Tropes I HATE

Today is Wednesday and you know what that means! It’s time for another Top Five Wednesday! As always, Top Five Wednesday was created by GingerReadsLainey and you can find all the information you need on the GoodReads page.

This weeks topic is about the Top 5 Books Tropes You HATE!! I decided not to choose the ones that I knew everyone would pick, so there’s no InstaLove or Love Triangle on this list! Although I do hate those. As always, this is in no order and I probably hate them all as much as the other.

1.The “Manic Pixie Dream Girl”

Arghhh! I’m sick of this! The whimsical girl that isn’t really that nice of a person and just does whatever she wants. She never cares about who she hurts and wants people to do whatever she wants at the drop of a hat! Margo Roth Spiegelman I’m looking at you!

2. The “You’re Not Like Any Other Girl”

No! No! No! Shut up! I’m sick of hearing this. I hate when guys in books say this. So you’re telling me that you’ve never met ANYONE like this plain Jane before? Are you kidding me?

3. The “Miscommunication”

This is when the whole story is based on the two characters not understanding each other. Or that they just don’t talk to each other about a problem and there’s sneaking around because no one wants to speak up. It’s just frustrating.

4. The “Chosen One”

Now I love Harry Potter and I love The Hunger Games, don’t get me wrong. It just seems there’s a lot of fantasy and dystopian books that have that one main character that saves the world or whatever. Like their whole purpose in life is to lead a rebellion or defeat a dark wizard. This one person in the entire world is the only person to be able to save everyone. What? What? Huh?

5. The “My Family Doesn’t Care”

Where are the parents in YA?! Or let me rephrase that. Where are all of the GOOD parents in YA? Seriously though, it seems like there are no parents in YA/New Adult books, and if there are, they’re either divorced, abusive, drunks, addicts or just don’t seem to care and think that their child is a burden or something.

So that is my list of books tropes that I HATE! Do you agree with me? Do you disagree? Let me know!

Have a wonderful day and I will talk to you soon!!

Currently Reads – 14.08.2015

Hello there! Thought I’d do a quick #FridayReads kind of thing. I may not get a lot of reading done as I am baking cupcakes tonight as it’s my friends 21st birthday tomorrow and I wanted to be the bestest friend I can be. Then tomorrow I have work, then I’m celebrating with my friends for their birthday. So I’m only really going to get some reading done on Sunday. So here is what I’m reading over the weekend!

The Coincidence of Callie and Kayden – Jessica Sorensen

IMG_0780

I am currently loving this! I always forget how much I love New Adult books until I read one. This has me hooked and I’m obsessed!

The Great Gatsby – F. Scott Fitzgerald

IMG_0776

I’m only about 50 pages of the way through this so far but I’m enjoying it. Not loving it but its good.

That’s what I’m reading this weekend. Sorry this was so short but I have to go check on my cupcakes soon! What are you currently reading? Let me know!

Have a great weekend!

Bye!

T5W: Required Reading

Hello you sexy ladies and gents! How are you today? I’m most certainly not okay as I watched the Pretty Little Liars finale today… and I’m just not okay!!

Anyway! Today is Wednesday, so I thought I would do a quick Top Five Wednesday as today’s topic was really interesting. Top Five Wednesday was created by GingerReadsLainey and you can check out the Goodreads group for all the information you could possibly wish for! This weeks topic is your top five favourite books that you were required to read for school.

I had a hard time doing this one as at my schools we didn’t really read whole books for exams and assignments. I’m from England so I will try my best with what years/grades I would have been in when reading these books. But here goes nothing! As always these are not in order.

Kensukes_Kingdom_colour_jacket1.Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo

I read this in Year 3 in Primary School and I was 7, turning 8 (which I believe is the 2nd Grade?). This is about a young boy who washes up on a deserted island after he is thrown over board during a stormy night on his families boat. I loved this, and I think everyone in my class really enjoyed it. We also read Butterfly Lion by Michael Morpurgo, but I didn’t really enjoy that all that much.

2. The Harry Potter Series (Books 1-4) – J. K. Rowling

Yes! We read the first four books in the Harry Potter series in Year 3 (2nd Grade). It was a wonderful time!

3. Romeo and Juliet – William Shakespeare

Now we read a lot of Shakespeare during Secondary School but Romeo and Juliet stuck out the most. We read it in Year 10 (9th Grade) and again in Year 11 (10th Grade). I loved this and we also got to watch the Baz Luhrmann 1996 film with Leonardo DiCaprio in it which was a bonus!

4. A Christmas Carol – Charles Dickens

A Christmas Classic is it not?! Marley and Scrooge! Christmas Ghosts! What’s not to love? We read this in Year 11 (10th Grade) and we also got to watch A Muppet’s Christmas Carol which is just brilliant.

mice-and-men

5. Of Mice And Men – John Steinbeck

A classic that I think was read by everyone in England (maybe? That’s probably a lie actually). Once again we read this in Year 11 (10th Grade), and I remember the whole class had to take turns reading pages out loud. We then watched the film after reading it, and then we may have read it again before out exams started later that year.

What did you have to read during school? Did you enjoy any of them? Let me know, maybe you read something I have? Until next time guys!

Bye!

BookTubeAThon Wrap Up 2015

Hello again!

I’m here today with my BookTubeAThon wrap up! I loved the BookTubeAThon this year, and I think it may have been my most successful BookTubeAThon to date!

I worked 6 of the 7 days of the readathon and on Sunday I was so ill that I couldn’t keep my eyes open for long and had to lie down in a dark room all day (super fun times). That being said I did finish 5 books and got part way through some other books. I moved away from my TBR a little but I enjoyed everything I read. So here’s what I read.

  • A Book With Blue On The Cover AND The Last Book You Acquired:

P.S I Still Love You – Jenny Han

IMG_0755

This is the second book in the To All The Boys I’ve Loved before duology. I can’t say much because I don’t want to spoil the first book, but I really enjoyed this one! I was already 100 pages through this one before I started the readathon.

4/5 stars

237 pages read.

  • A Book You Really Want To Read

Severed Heads, Broken Hearts (The Beginning Of Everything) – Robyn Schneider

IMG_0770

Ezra is a golden boy. He’s popular, smart, young, handsome and has a Tennis Scholarship. One night a reckless driver hits Ezra’s car, crushing his knee, his social life and any chance at an athletic career.

LOVED THIS! Wow. The writing was brilliant, it got me hooked and it flowed wonderfully. This whole book was witty and the jokes where smart and smiled all the way through it. I really cared for the characters but got really bored of Cassidy. She’s that classic “whimsical, I don’t care about anything” girl like Margo from Paper Towns and Alaska from Looking For Alaska. It’s so clique and boring.

That being said I loved this so much!

4.5/stars!

335 pages read.

  • Finish A Book Without Letting Go Of It

Waiting – Carol Lynch Williams

IMG_0768

When London’s brother Zach dies, her life spirals into the dark. This is a griping and heartfelt novel about love, family and death.

This really got me in the feels. I kept thinking over and over again about what I would do if one of my brothers died. I did have a few problems with this one however. The characters did things that weren’t very thought through and didn’t make much sense, and their actions were never really explained. Nothing was explained really.

3/5 stars.

352 pages read.

  • A Book By An Author Who Shares The Same First Letter Of Your Last Name

An Abundance Of Katherines – John Green

IMG_0766

This is about Colin, a child prodigy who is obsessed with Katherines. Okay, maybe not obsessed but that’s what I took away from this book. Nothing really happened, I found it difficult to read and I just didn’t like it. Bleh.

2/5 stars

227 pages read.

  • Read 7 Books In Total

Warm Bodies – Isaac Marion

IMG_0782

For my fifth book I decided to read Warm Bodies from my August TBR list. I’ve wanted to watch the film for so long, so I can now finally get to it. All I really knew going into this was that it was about a zombie named “R” that befriended a human.

I really liked this, I didn’t expect to like it as much as I did. I really began to care for the characters and I was rooting for them all the way. I gave it 4/5 stars simply because I felt like something was missing to give it 5/5.

4/5 stars!

240 pages read!

Fangirl – Rainbow Rowell

IMG_0763

I haven’t finished this yet! But I am loving it!

98 pages read during the readathon.

Yay! Tah Dah!

That was everything I read during the BookTubeAThon! How well did you do? I finished 5 books and completed 5 challenges. I also read a total of 1489 pages!

Did you participate in the BookTubeAThon? How did you do?!

August TBR 2015

IMG_0774

Hola! How’re you today?

I thought I’d my TBR for August with you. I read 15 books in July, so hopefully I can keep up with that. I currently have 98 physical books on my TBR shelf, which I hope to knock down to 90 by September.

I’m planning to take part in the BookTubeAThon from the 3rd to the 9th, and you can check out my TBR if you’d like, as I wont mention those in this one.

The Great Gatsby – F. Scott Fitzgerald

IMG_0776

Can you believe I’ve never read this? I’m super excited for this one.

Eclipse – Stephanie Meyer

IMG_0778

The third book in the Twilight series. I think its about time I finished this series, and I plan/hope to marathon the last two books and novella soon.

Saving Jackie K – L.D.C. Fitzgerald

IMG_0784

I adored 11.22.63 by Stephen King because I really enjoy reading about JFK, and this is all about Jackie Kennedy. So I’m excited for this.

The Coincidence of Callie and Kayden – Jessica Sorensen

IMG_0780

I need to throw a New Adult in the mix every now and then and I’ve heard a lot of good things about this one.

Warm Bodies – Isaac Marion

IMG_0782

A short book about zombies and I’ve still not seen the film!

I hope to get through all of these, as well as the books in my BookTubeAThon TBR. I doubt I will do it, but one can dream!

What do plan on reading this month?
