T5W: Book Tropes I HATE

Today is Wednesday and you know what that means! It’s time for another Top Five Wednesday! As always, Top Five Wednesday was created by GingerReadsLainey and you can find all the information you need on the GoodReads page.

This weeks topic is about the Top 5 Books Tropes You HATE!! I decided not to choose the ones that I knew everyone would pick, so there’s no InstaLove or Love Triangle on this list! Although I do hate those. As always, this is in no order and I probably hate them all as much as the other.

1.The “Manic Pixie Dream Girl”

Arghhh! I’m sick of this! The whimsical girl that isn’t really that nice of a person and just does whatever she wants. She never cares about who she hurts and wants people to do whatever she wants at the drop of a hat! Margo Roth Spiegelman I’m looking at you!

2. The “You’re Not Like Any Other Girl”

No! No! No! Shut up! I’m sick of hearing this. I hate when guys in books say this. So you’re telling me that you’ve never met ANYONE like this plain Jane before? Are you kidding me?

3. The “Miscommunication”

This is when the whole story is based on the two characters not understanding each other. Or that they just don’t talk to each other about a problem and there’s sneaking around because no one wants to speak up. It’s just frustrating.

4. The “Chosen One”

Now I love Harry Potter and I love The Hunger Games, don’t get me wrong. It just seems there’s a lot of fantasy and dystopian books that have that one main character that saves the world or whatever. Like their whole purpose in life is to lead a rebellion or defeat a dark wizard. This one person in the entire world is the only person to be able to save everyone. What? What? Huh?

5. The “My Family Doesn’t Care”

Where are the parents in YA?! Or let me rephrase that. Where are all of the GOOD parents in YA? Seriously though, it seems like there are no parents in YA/New Adult books, and if there are, they’re either divorced, abusive, drunks, addicts or just don’t seem to care and think that their child is a burden or something.

So that is my list of books tropes that I HATE! Do you agree with me? Do you disagree? Let me know!

Have a wonderful day and I will talk to you soon!!

  1. You nailed it! These are definitely the most annoying cliches used in YA books. Although for me, whether or not I will hate a book for being full of tropes also depends on the writing–there are some writers who can actually make even the most commonly used tropes sound good!
